Why “Lunchtime”?
Ever since we began playing as a duo in 2004, we’ve enjoyed exploring the technique of improvising melodies simultaneously. When we began playing with our mentor Max Hartstein, we were delighted to learn that he had a special term for this style of playing. Sometimes in the middle of a tune, we would hear Max call out “LUNCHTIME!” with his distinctive growl. That was our cue to improvise a chorus all together, weaving multiple melodies into a spontaneous counterpoint. It was always a wild ride! We still love to play this way, as you can hear in several tracks on this album.

Several of these compositions honor musicians who have mentored or otherwise inspired us:

"Twelve Ten Thirteen" commemorates the passing of our hero, guitarist Jim Hall.
"Coolin’ One for Bowdog" is dedicated to KC bassist Bob Bowman.
"Tears I Cried for You" was written after pianist Claude Sifferlen’s passing.
"Circle One" attempts to capture the flavor of Max’s bass style.

As a whole, this album is dedicated to the memory of our mentors Max and Claude, whose lives and music have profoundly shaped our own.

The tunes presented here explore a wide range of moods, from grief and tenderness to joy, humor and childlike wonder. We invite you to enjoy the journey with us, before breakfast, after dinner, even ‘round lunchtime!
